Preaching

Preaching is one of the basic functions of parish ministry.  At it's best, the sermon is both pastoral and prophetic, calling preacher and the congregation alike to deeper consideration and just action.  I few years ago I decided to go back to school to study for a Doctor of Ministry degree in preaching.  My greatest interest and concern centered on the issue of context.  How do we take a "text" that we wish to explore (a scripture passage, and idea, philosophical/theological concept or poem) and make it understandable using the symbolic language of a specific local community?  Since then I have tried to apply the lessons I learned in that program to the contemporary practice of what is, after all, an ancient art.  

Here you will find a selection of sermon videos that I hope help to interest you in our worship services at Eliot Church.  For a more extensive collection feel free to check out the "sermon roll" which will let you browse a wider selection based on theme and the date it was given.  I prefer providing videos rather than texts as the actual message in a sermon is found in its final performance rather than in the static words on paper (virtual or otherwise).
